Hells Gate, The Beast of all Geothermal Parks

Rotorua’s most active geothermal field.

Set in 50 acres of rumbling and steaming  geothermal activity, as soon as you set foot in the amazing landscape you will understand why George Bernard Shaw looked in awe and gave the area it’s famous name “Hells Gate”.

This park has 2.5km of trails including a bush walk. You can stroll around on your own or join the guided tour.

There is a hot water waterfall, mud volcano, steaming pools and fumeroles, land coral and sulphur crystals and deposits.
Follow the footsteps of WARRIORS of old through the swirling clouds of steam and see the special mud pools and sulphurous waters that have been guarded for centuries by Kaitiaki, ‘Wai Ora’ (guardian warrior) after whom the spa is named.

The unique geothermal muds and waters of Rotorua are renown for their curative and invigorating properties—and this is particularly so at “Hells Gate”. For more than 700 years, Rotorua Maori (Ngati Rangiteaorere tribe) have lived on this special site, treasured by Maori as a place of healing and revitalisation.  The first Euopeans visited Hells Gate, Tikitere more than 150 years ago.
